Munch is a 1-2 year old, blue Doberboy who came to DPRWPA via PNP (Pilots N Paws) from a shelter in GA. He is a sweet boy who needs some basic training. He is HW+ and will receive treatment prior to going to his new home.  He is very thin right now, but we are sure some good nutrition will change all of that! He gets along well with other dogs and is a sweet boy!  More to come....

Sassy is a four year old, red Dobergal who came to DPRWPA via PNP (Pilots N Paws) from a shelter in GA. She is a super sweet girl who just loves people! She does well with other dogs and seems to have a great temperament.  More to come...

Bubba is a four-five year old Doberboy who came to DPRWPA via PNP (Pilots N Paws) from a shelter in GA.  He has a wonderful temperament and loves playing with Sassy - so he would do well with another female dog.  He seems to love all people too, but probably should not live with cats... More to come...

This is Stanley, as in The Stanley Cup. He is about 8 wks old. Someone said they "found" him walking the road north of Pittsburgh, they brought him to the humane society. Possibly it was the owners or friends of someone who may have bred the litter. We have found out this little guy has some hearing and eye problems guessing they did not want him to sell so they turned him in. You can Tell he must have been left outside. His ears are scabby, marks and little scabs on his body. On the thin side. His ears have been medicated as they seem to be bothering him. He eats like a little pig. So far he does not seem socialized much, he does not know much about toys, etc. He would really like a home and a family to love.

Willie, me and Sassy at our old 'home'...

My last litter of babies born in TN

This is the day I arrived in Pittsburgh with Willie - what a great day that was!

Hi Ya'll - My name is Sadie and I'm originally from KY where I was owned by a family who only cared about using me and my friends to make an easy buck.  Easy for them - certainly not for me or my friends.  We had to live outside in a building that only had three sides - is that even a building?  Anyway, my friends included a male Dobie named Willie, a female Dobie named Sassy, two Chihuahuas (I'm not sure they even had names) and another nameless Aussie X furkid.   We all lived outside in this three sided structure (yes, that's more appropriate) no matter what the weather was like. Sassy and I had our puppies at the same time and we all lived together in one area.  One day our owners (using that term very loosely) ran out of food for our babies and a nice lady showed up to take our babies away with her.  She also took Sassy and the two Chihuahuas, but our owners said Willie, the Aussie X and I could NOT go.  The nice lady begged, but our owners would not budge. That day was bitter sweet for me - I was happy my babies were going somewhere with the nice lady - I just knew she would take care of them - but I was sad I also could not leave with them.  Thank goodness I still had Willie and my other fur friend though. Some time went by and then one day I while I was sniffing around our pen I smelled something I remembered very clearly - the smell of the nice lady.  I sniffed and sniffed again - YES! it was her!  When I saw her I wondered if she was bringing our babies back, but the truck was empty.  I remember wondering why she had come back... after all our owners said there was NO WAY we were leaving... And, then the most wonderful thing happened - she came over to our pen, opened the door, took the three of us out and put us in her truck!  It all happened so fast I could barely believe it was real!  I ended up staying with her for a few weeks.  Finally one day she came in, put Willie and me in the truck and told us we were going to rescues in Pittsburgh and we were going to fly there in a plane! 'Yippee' I thought!  Wait, what is a plane?  Well, I found out a plane is something that is loud and makes my stomach do flip flops. Willie and I just cuddled in the plane and soon we arrived in Pittsburgh where a couple of nice women were waiting for us.  One woman was waiting for Willie and another woman was waiting for me.  I'll be honest, I was afraid when I arrived at my new house.  It was a new place with new canine pals and new people.  It took me awhile, but I soon realized these people just wanted to love me.  My new mommy also told me that she had taken in and cared for some of my babies who left with the nice lady the first time... ahhh, I thought - what a strange coincidence!  But, really it wasn't a coincidence - my new mommy told me she felt as though she had to bring me here too because she had been praying for quite some time that I would not have to live in that back yard any longer.

As time went by here in my new home, I could tell I was going to have more babies. You see, I came into rescue pregnant again. My new mommy promised me I would receive the best care possible this time and she also told me this would be the last time I would be having babies... well, what a relief that was! I was starting to think that was my only purpose in life!  I'm only two years old and I think I have had more than enough babies for one lifetime!

So now here we are, 5 weeks after the birth of my last and final litter, and I'm going to be looking for a forever home of my own!  I was a little sad thinking about leaving my current home, but my mommy sat me down and explained how rescue works.  She said there is a family out there waiting just for me!  She said she will always love me and she will always stay in touch so that made me feel better!

My mom said I would do great in a home with a canine companion since here I love playing with my Dobie foster brother and my Min Pin foster sister, but I would also do just fine and the center of attention as an only dog!  She also said I am a good girl with cats... =)  I think I would like a home with older children - maybe teenaged and up like the kids in my foster home.  They really knew how to take their time with me when I first arrived and they never made me feel uncomfortable since I am a shy girl with new people.

If you are my special family please call soon - I'm really looking forward to the day when I can finally be with my forever family!  I have waited a long, long time!!

Baton

Baton was surrendered to a shelter in Rochester, NY, by his owners who no longer wanted him.  They didn't feel the need to provide much information other than he was good with other dogs and been around kids occasionally and did fine with them...

In any case, Baton went into foster care and was doing well for a week or so then suddenly took a turn for the worse.  He was lethargic and could not use his legs.  We immediately admitted him back to Lollypop and where they began treatment.  It was suspected that he might have Wobblers so we ran some more tests and made an appointment with a Neurologist.  The Neurologist confirmed that Baton does NOT have Wobblers - thank goodness!  He told us to re-do his blood work again and make sure it was ok.  If that was the case, it was probably an infection.  We ran another blood panel and everything looks great!

So, now Baton is ready to go to his forever home!  He is a big boy who loves people!  He does really well with other dogs and would do great with kids over 8 because of his size.

Baton has been through a lot this past month and is very excited to finally be able to go to his forever home...

Lucy

Hi all,

My name is Lucy and I came from a nasty puppy mill in KY.  I lived with several other dogs in one open pen - probably at least 50.  I am only three years old and I have probably had litters from my first heat cycle until I left for rescue.  I loved my babies - as any good mommy would - but I just couldn't understand why we had to have so many...

When I arrived here, via a pilot from Pilots N Paws with my friend Louie, my new foster mommy was so upset about the thousands of little seed ticks that were all over my body.  Hey, I never liked them either but I guess I just got used to them because what could I do?

We came home and immediately began treatment for those nasty little ticks - I was such a good girl for all of these treatments - I never fussed, snapped... nothing.  In a few days all of the ticks were dead and wow did that feel great!

I had another problem though - I was so very under socialized - I never had many interactions with humans so I was afraid of most people... I never growled or snapped - I would never hurt a human, but I would run to my crate or the corner because I was afraid.

I'm doing much better now - I've been in foster care for months and I've gained a lot of confidence even though I still have a way to go...

I'm looking for a home where I can be the alpha canine - since I have gained some confidence I feel like I should be the queen bee in the house.  I think I would do best in a home with a submissive male dog... Ooooh, and no little dogs or puppies please - for some reason I just don't the patience for puppies and little dogs seem to remind me of puppies!  And, I would do best with teenaged children and up - little ones might be a bit much for me.

I'm a good girl - I'm house trained, crate trained and I really don't do anything wrong in the house...

Now that I am ready to find my forever home I hope it comes along quickly... I'm all ready to go so just give me a call...

Lucy xo

5-3-09 Update:

Misty is doing well, although her leg is not where we hoped it would be.

We will be scheduling an appointment with Dr. Anderson for his opinion, but I do believe at this point it is what it is.  It was a gamble and we tried our best, but her muscle had suffered so much damage prior to us getting her that the muscle quickly contracted down.

We are ordering a cart for Misty so she will be able to enjoy long walks and be more active.

This experience with Misty has been one I would not have traded for anything in the world.  This little girl is so very brave and does not allow her disability to stop her for one second.  She is a very special girl and I have learned a lot from her.  She has worked her way well into my heart and the hearts of so many others - she truly is an inspiration.  Having her come in to my life has been nothing short of a blessing.

I have been amazed with the kindness and generosity of so, so many people all across the US - you have all helped us to help this sweet girl and we could have NEVER done it without your help!   Thank you from all of us here at DDR!  You all are amazing people!

Misty has a visit with Dr. Anderson scheduled on Friday, June 5th so we will post an update then as well.

Thank you so much!

Misty

There is no end to the sad stories in rescue. Misty's story is no exception.  She was brought into her local vet clinic as an 8 week old puppy with a fractured pelvis and two broken legs.  That's right - ONLY 8 weeks old - a mere baby!  The story told by her owners was she fell off of a porch, but the injuries didn't seem to fit the story.  It is more likely someone fell on Misty. In any case, a wonderful vet in MS performed reconstructive surgery on both of Misty's back legs and sent her home. Unfortunately Misty's owners did not follow through with proper post-surgical care and it became necessary to amputate her left back leg.  At some point down the road the pin came out of her existing leg and she needed another procedure. Her owners did not provide physical therapy for her existing leg and again no proper care was taken after her surgery  and poor little Misty is now having a hard time getting around.  She will scoot around on her butt or use her leg more like a peg than an actual functioning leg.  She is far from having normal use of her back leg.

A week or so ago her owners brought her back to the vet clinic claiming Misty was not happy at their house and they no longer could keep her.  So, Misty found herself homeless and in need of care for her leg.  When we heard Misty's story we immediately said we would take her.  This poor little one deserves so much more... and we intend on making that happen for her.

A wonderful friend offered to pick Misty up from the vet clinic and held on to her until Misty's flight to PA could be arranged.  Thank you Gretchen and Susanne!! =)

Misty arrived in PA on Valentine's Day and visited our vet a few days later.

We were anxious to see what our vet's opinion of Misty's leg would be and it appears as though her knee cap has fused to the bone in her leg which makes it impossible for her to bend her leg - thus causing her to hop around on it like it is a peg.

We will be making an appointment with the ortho specialist here in Pittsburgh to see what we can do - if anything.

It is possible she could be a candidate for a knee cap replacement surgery and if not she may need a cart to assist her with mobility. Either option means hundreds, if not well over a thousand, dollars.  We will post an update once we have completed teh consultation with the specialist.

We know we will be able to raise the money to help little Misty with your help.

3-11-09 UPDATE:

She is now in need of surgery and we need to raise enough money to cover her surgery as well as physical therapy post-surgery.

Her procedure estimate is $1200-$1500 and we are still waiting for an estimate for the cost of physical therapy.

he visited PVSEC and will need surgery.  The specialist intends to perform an FHO procedure and also during that surgery attempt to break down any adhesions between the quadraceps muscle group and the femur.  She will also require aggressive physical therapy after the surgery.

Update from her foster mom:

Bubbs is doing awesome! In one week she has completely turned around - she LOVES attention and affection from her foster mommy and daddy!  She is a very playful dog once she feels comfortable... and she loves playing with the other dogs.  She is a very sweet girl and just needs some time to warm up and trust her new family.  Bubbs would make an awesome addition for a single person or a couple who want a very easy, laid back little girl who loves to sit in your lap!

Hi Everyone!  My name is Buttons, although my foster family has nick-named me Bubbles... cute right?

I'm the product of an Amish puppy mill.  I lived my life in a crate and just kept having babies, babies and more babies!  In the winters it was very cold and in the summers it was very hot.  My feet hurt from the wire I had to live on and no one ever gave me a pet - not once.

I've been out of the mill for quite awhile now and I'm looking for a home where someone will be patient with me and give me time to adjust.  Once I get to know you - trust me - I'm ALL yours!  I love human companionship - I really do... once I know you won't hurt me!

I love walks, cuddling and treats - wow, do I get some awesome treats in my foster home!  My foster momma shares treats with me all the time and I LOVE it!

I also like other dogs - except dogs that try to dominate me.  If you are laid back like me we should get along just fine - oh, and big or small... makes no difference to me! =)

I've been told I'm half Chi and half Corgi.

So, if you are looking for a cute little girl to cuddle on your lap or go for a car ride (I really enjoy riding in the car!), I think I might be your girl.  I would prefer a home with no small children - teenagers and up would be just fine with me!

I'm waiting... so, please come see me soon!  I just know someone is out there waiting to find me and it could be you!!

Yes - that's right.  I'm Jasper from NC!  I am new to rescue and will be coming to Pittsburgh this weekend! I'm REAL excited to get there!  LET'S GO PENS!

So, anyway, I'm a Chinese Crested... so, yah, the crazy hair is on purpose!  I think I'm adorable, but hey maybe I'm biased!

I'm around 2 years old and I'm told I'm such a good boy by my wonderful foster momma here in NC who is taking care of me until I come to Pittsburgh.  I go potty outside and I get along great with the other dogs that live here.  I am even good when it's time to go in my crate.  Oooooh and car rides - they rock!  I had never been in a car much because I lived outside tied to my house.  I thought it was kind of strange, but there wasn't much I could do about it.  I definitely like living inside MUCH better!

Well, I'm told there is a perfect home just waiting for a boy like me - so, if that's your home please let me know!  I'm so excited I can barely stand it!

                                                 ToTo

Hi!!  My name is Toto and I arrived at DDR via Bowling Green shelter in KY!  Thank goodness for the good people at Bowling Green because they picked me up from another shelter in the area where I was out of time - I'm not sure what 'out of time' means, but they certainly seemed upset about it.  I was glad to get out of there anyway because it was quite a scarey place for a boy my age.  You see I am around 12 years old and my family took me for a ride one day, dropped me off at the shelter (man it was LOUD in there!) and they never, ever came back.  I was so sad... every time I heard a voice I would jump up to see if it was them, but it never was...

There were lots and lots of other furkids there too - a lot of them also seemed sad... I hope they found families or rescues too.  I'm so grateful I will never have to go back to a shelter again...

So anyway, here I am in Pittsburgh and I'm looking for a new home to call my own.  I really am a good boy - I am totally house trained and I get along with everyone and everything! Ooooh and I'm only 9 lbs. so you can carry me all over the place if you want!

I love to sit and cuddle - that is one of my absolute favorite things!  Sometimes I also play with the other furkids in my foster home... I think they all like me too!

I also got a hair cut when I came to rescue - my hair was a mess!  Once again, I was such a good boy for my hair cut and now I look and smell much better.

My perfect new home will only have teenaged children and up... and I'd love a fenced yard so I can run around and play.

I'm just going to curl up on this comfy blanket... so, if you want to meet a boy like me please just call...

Roxie

ROXIE NEEDS YOU!

Poor Roxie!  She is looking for a home and she's hoping it comes along soon because she had to go to the kennel because cats are not at the top of her 'Favorite Things' list.  She was doing very well in foster care, but because she would prefer a feline free environment her foster mom very sadly had to move her to the kennel.

Roxie is house trained, crate trained and knows things such as sit, stay, etc. as well as doggie door tricks!  We think Roxie has the potential to go very far in obedience or even agility - she's smart as a whip!

A fenced yard is required for this beauty so she can run free and not chase little animals... an activity that is primarily only fun for Roxie and not fun for the little animals.

In her foster home she was allowed to sleep with her family - hey who wouldn't want to cuddle up with this cutie right? - but she will willingly sleep in a crate if required.

Roxie is still a young Dobergirlie and she likes to pluck the stuffing (a favorite pastime for young Doberkids right!) out of blankets, pillows and... well, anything that contains stuffing... so she will need to be crated when unattended.  Certainly she will grow out of this, but for now it is best to keep her and the pillows safe by keeping her crated when she is left alone.

She does well with other dogs, but is iffy with introductions if too many happen at once.  Nice and slow is how Roxie prefers to meet new furkid friends... and she normally does fine with dogs of all sizes with a proper intro.

Roxie also is A-ok with kids! =)

Roxie is not a DDR dog, but we are happy to list her as a courtesy for the wonderful people at

4 Paws Sake, Inc. located in Sylvania, OH.

Please consider adopting her or…why not ask about fostering her to see how well she fits into your family!

Not Currently Available - Jewel

Hi all! My name is Jewel and I'm from the southern state of Georgia.  I came to rescue from some nice people in the south who thought it was important for me to get into a rescue.  A friendly couple happened to be driving to PA and brought me along for the ride!  Whew - that was a long ride!

Anyway, once I was here my foster mommy found out I was heart worm positive - meaning worms are living in my heart and lungs and its not good!  I was wondering why I was feeling so tired lately!  Thank goodness they figured out why!

So, my foster mommy told me I was going to receive treatment - well, let me tell ya... it was more like 'pain and sickness'!  Heart worm treatment is NOT fun - it's painful and it makes you feel very sick... which was confusing because I thought it was supposed to make me feel better... =(  My foster mommy told me so many times that she was so, so sorry I was not feeling well and she knew my treatment was not pleasant.  She also told me if my former owners had just given me a pill one time - just ONE time - each month I would not have had to go through this.  Why would my former family not do that?  Why would they ignore giving me a pill to spare me this horrible feeling??  I hope none of my other fur-friends have to go through this...

Well, I'm recovering quite well from my treatment and finally I'm starting to feel better - thankfully!  I am a good girl and, hey, I take pride in the fact that I am a Doberqueen!  I don't have accidents in the house, I don't chew things I shouldn't and I LOVE every human I meet! My foster mommy tells me I am truly a "jewel'' all the time!

I'm glad to be in rescue - it is certainly nice here and now that I am feeling better I'm hoping to be able to go to my forever home soon!

Hugs and Doberkisses,

Jewel

Update:  6-11-09

Jewel is doing well and recovering quite nicely from her HW treatment.  We have well over $800 in treating Jewel for HW.  She came through her treatment well, but suffered from severe incontinence a week or so into her treatment until now... thankfully we she is starting to improve in that area and the leaking has become much less. We had this issue with our Jack - who we treated for HW several months ago - and hope Jewel will also move beyond this just as Jack did.

If you are not currently using HW preventative, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE reconsider, have your pet tested and start using preventative.  No dog deserves to go through what our HW+ dogs have to endure with this treatment.  A simple monthly pill could have prevented poor Jewel from going through this!

For more information on HW prevention, please visit the web site listed below:

PENDING - Taylor Femi

Hi everyone!  My name is Taylor Femi!  Yes, it's a cute name... so thanks for noticing it.  I guess I have this cute name because everyone who meets me thinks I'm super cute!  I haven't had much a good life until now though... there was a time, not long ago, where I was terrified and starving.  You see, my family living in a rental and one day the landlord said they needed to move because they weren't paying their rent.  So, they packed up everything and moved everything out - box by box... piece of furniture after piece of furniture.  I sat in my crate like a good girl... patiently waiting for them to remove our things.  I'm sure they left me for last so I would be safe... well, when the last box was moved out of the house I got very excited!  I was next - I just knew it!!  I started wagging my tail... here they come! Then... I remember thinking... why are they just walking around?  Hey, wait, I'm right here... I've been sitting here being a good girl....hey... wait... why are they closing the door?  Where are you going?  Maybe they are coming back for me... maybe the didn't have enough room... maybe I'll take a nap.

Well, when I woke up from my nap they still had not returned... so, I took another nap... and then I had to go potty.  I certainly didn't want to do that in my crate so I held it until I couldn't hold it any more.  I was so ashamed of going potty in my crate, but what could I do?  Hours turned into days and finally almost a week later someone opened the door.  I was so excited - my family finally remembered me!  Uh... no... it wasn't my family.  But, it was a very nice man who ran over to my crate and opened it very quickly.  He seemed upset... actually angry... thankfully not at me.  He just kept talking about my owners and how could they have done this to me...

He drove me to animal control and suddenly everyone was showering me with affection!  They kept looking at me with sad faces... I was so happy to be out of that crate that I couldn't imagine why they were so sad...

Any way, I'm doing much better now - I even saw the doctor.  My feet are a little flat but the doctor said that is from poor nutrition.... and he said they could get better over time.  And, even if they don't, flat feet never killed anyone right?

So, I'm flying to Pittsburgh on Sunday and I can't wait to meet my foster mommy.  I'll miss my current foster mommy but she told me everything will be fine and I'm going to find a forever home that will never, ever leave me again... Whew!  thank goodness because it was very sad and lonely being a 6 month old pup and all by myself!

Doberkisses and lots of love,

Taylor Femi

Not Currently Available - Mira

Hello all,

My name is Mira - short for Miracle.  This name was chosen for me because it is a miracle I am alive.  Somehow I ended up homeless and roaming around the Buffalo, NY, area.  I think I must have been wondering for 2 or 3 months... because it seemed like a long, long time! I was so scared and lonely, but I had to keep searching for food... although it was hard to come by.

One day a man pulled over beside me in his car and tried to convince me to get in... well, I wanted to trust him - I really did, but I just couldn't do it.  Suddenly a lady stopped her car too and she came over to me... something about her made me trust her so I decided to get in her car.  She seemed very concerned and upset - she just kept telling me everything was going to be ok now... Whew!  Well, that was something I had been waiting to hear for quite awhile.  I wonder if she has any food because that is what I would really, really like!

We went and visited a vet - he checked me all over and said it was a miracle I was still alive... and that I might not have made it much longer on my own.... =(

They offered me some food - just a little bit and I ate it right up!

I have to eat several small meals a day - even though if I had my way I would probably eat and eat and eat!

We went home and a few days later another very nice lady named Sue came to pick me up and take me to her house near Rochester, NY.  I was sad to say goodbye to the very nice people I was staying with, but the told me all about rescue before I left and rescue sounded nice!

We got home and I met my new fur siblings!  They were very nice to me and I really liked them too!  My new foster mommy and daddy just love me and I am so grateful to them that I never leave my foster mommy's side - not for a single second!  She can't do anything without me... I just won't have it... =)

I am doing much better and steadily gaining weight - it feels really good to be eating normally again that's for sure!

My foster mommy tells me I am such a good girl... she tells me I am super precious and I will never have to worry about being on my own again... that makes me feel so good!
