DOBAPALOOZA 2008! We raised $800!!!!
Several months ago I was contacted by a Moon Area Senior High student, Joe Yecko. He had seen a few articles about our rescue in local press and wanted to do a fundraising event for Distinguished Doberman Rescue! We met, discussed his ideas, and he asked if I would be his mentor. I accepted and we began planning an event that would help our Doberman rescue. Joe's family has a cat, but he had no experience with Dobermans. I was looking forward to showing Joe how amazing our Dobermans truly are and why we devote so much of ourselves to their welfare. During our planning stage Joe and I met several times. He also attended a meeting where he met all of our board members and their Doberkids. He also joined our Yahoo group and was able to get a sense of how a Doberman rescue functions. Joe and I decided our event should be about educating the public on the Doberman breed, Heartworm/parasite prevention, Amish puppy mills, dog adoption and micro chipping - each topic had it's own information station. We also decided to supply the public with resources that would be helpful in the event that their dog went missing, they needed to relocate, etc. Additionally, we asked several dog trainers to attend. They were available to offer training tips and advice. In order to raise funds, we had a Chinese auction and a bake sale. We asked local businesses for donated items and had volunteers bake/donate baked items. We sold home made fleece dog toys (made by Joe and his mom). Joe also sold these in school, prior to the event, and raised over $100!!
The event was a huge success and we hope
that Joe gets a good grade on his project!
